Composed circa 1680, Henry Purcell’s Fantasia Upon One Note refers to the tenor voice (here, the viola) that sustains a single pitch throughout the entire piece. Written when the English Baroque composer was just 21, the work hints at the structural and sonic innovation seen in his later works.
