Osprey Identification, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the ...

The arrival of Spring in the northeast is marked by the return of the Osprey to their nesting grounds here. Numerous Osprey have already been sighted in CT! One of the biggest dangers to osprey is “strings” as when strings of any sort are brought back to the nest, they can entangle a young osprey causing irreparable harm. String can be improperly discarded fishing line, balloon strings, we’ve even admitted an osprey with a sweatshirt hood string wrapped tightly around his legs. Be responsible wi

Say hello to Iowa's newest osprey chicks! 👋 You can watch them live on our Osprey Cam: iowadnr.gov/OspreyCam More about this unique Iowa raptor: https://www.iowadnr.gov/Conservation/Iowas-Wildlife/Osprey The camera is located on the Wells Fargo campus in West Des Moines. Just remember, nature isn't always pretty. While we enjoy following the exploits of these amazing raptors, images of them dispatching prey and the young competing for survival can be graphic and upsetting to some viewers. Video

Typically, the definition of mantling, refers to when birds of prey crouch over a recent kill with their wings spread, however it perfectly describes the typical reaction given by 33(11) when other Ospreys are close to the Manton Bay nest! 🦅 | Rutland Osprey Project

Bore da It's not unknown, but osprey fledgelings usually don't start fishing until they begin their first migration. Once they leave the nest and head toward Africa, there's no longer a supply of fish from Dad - so they have to learn pretty quickly. Well, Cennen has been fishing. She hasn't got it quite right yet though... Hopefully the next catch will be tastier. | Dyfi Osprey Project

33(11) has returned! More Osprey excitement this afternoon as we have just seen our resident male Osprey 33(11) touch down on the Manton Bay nest. He only stopped off on the nest briefly before flying past the Centre here at Lyndon. Remarkably this is exactly the same date that he returned last year. It’s marvellous to see him back here in Rutland. 33(11) has been breeding on the Manton Bay nest since 2015 and has raised 27 chicks with Maya. | Rutland Osprey Project

Day Four for Osprey Weekand a chance to come clean. Okay, it might not be a new dance move, but mantling is still very important. Mantling is a defensive behaviour that Ospreys do on the nest when another bird is getting a little bit too close. We can't believe it's already Day 5 of Osprey Week tomorrow. Come back again to learn about our arguably most famous bird on the Manton Bay nest. Any guesses who we're going to be talking about? | Rutland Osprey Project

We have our first Osprey back, and on the Manton Bay nest no less! 25(10), one of our breeding females on our other nest sites, has made a habit of stopping by on the Manton Bay nest before heading off to her own site in previous years. She is a Rutland born bird and has been breeding since 2013. | Rutland Osprey Project

We are now at the end of the Osprey season here at Rutland Water. It’s been a memorable year, and feels like only yesterday that we were celebrating the return of Maya and 33(11) to the Manton Bay nest. So much has happened in the last 6 months, what was the moment that stood out to you the most? Just a few of them memorable events included: - Maya and 33(11) returning within 24 hours of each other - Only one egg hatching this year - Terrifying incident where a fish nearly knocked the chick off

Today is day 26 since the first of our 4 Osprey eggs were laid on the Manton Bay nest 🥚 - 2nd April 🥚🥚 - 5th April 🥚🥚🥚 - 8th April 🥚🥚🥚🥚 - 11th April That means it should now be less than 2 weeks until we see the first one hatch. It’s around 35-42 between laying and hatching, so the earliest we would be expecting the first is the 7th May. Both Maya and 33(11) are continuing to incubate the eggs (and also enjoying the glorious weather). With the good weather set to continue for a while,

What do the Osprey sound like? We got to hear Maya on the nest earlier when her and 33(11) had to defend the nest from a couple of different Osprey that began to intrude on their nest. The technique we see from 33(11) is called mantling and helps them appear larger and therefore deter other birds. We are waiting to hopefully see Maya lay her first egg of the year soon. Maya and 33(11) have now been on the nest together for 16 days, and we would usually expect eggs between days 10-20. It’s also a
