Another Australian triumph! 🏆 Vegemite, marsupial-inspired breakdancing and the Hemsworths come to mind when pondering uniquely Aussie wonders. But, as it turns out, the world also has Australia to thank for its songbirds. 🎵 For a long time, scientists thought Australian songbirds had evolved from their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. But, DNA studies flipped that idea on its head. Not only that, but research has also uncovered that, like hummingbirds, songbirds repurposed a "savoury" taste

Hello to all earthworms and soil lovers alike! 🐛 This World Soil Day, we're digging into the thriving underground world beneath our feet. Billions of bacteria, kilometres of fungi, wriggly nematodes and mighty mites make up this bustling ecosystem. Together, they support plant growth, fight disease, tackle drought and even help break down chemicals. Soil is a vibrant patchwork of microbial life, and it’s what keeps Earth blooming. 🌱 | CSIRO

FRIDAY FACT Quokkas are nocturnal marsupials. They’re some of the smallest members of the macropod (or “big foot”) family, which also includes kangaroos and wallabies. 🦘 ⠀ If a quokka mother is threatened by a predator she will often throw her baby on the ground to distract the predator and save her own life. Just waiting for a mate. 🐨 Despite sounding like something from your nightmares, this sound is actually a male koala in the Pine Mountain area near Brisbane calling for a mate. Koalas can be difficult to spot from the ground, as they are most active at night and often rest high in trees during the day. To help us estimate the number of koalas in Australia, our National Koala Monitoring Program has been using acoustic recorders this mating season to capture sounds like these around the country.

Wombats always deserve a double take. ✌️ We're certain this song was inspired by these beautiful creatures. Wombats love to scratch. They do so to stay clean, removing dust or dirt particles from their skin. They also scratch when they've been bitten by external parasites like ticks, fleas, flies and mosquitos. 📹 | brindabella_the_wombat on Instagram #WombatWednesday | CSIRO

It's not easy to get fast and convenient food that could be considered 'nutritious'. For hospital patients, the elderly, and the disadvantaged, access to good food is even more problematic as their choice is often limited. So we've been working with Community Chef to solve this issue and bring high-quality and nutritious meals to these communities. http://www.csiro.au/en/Research/FNF/Areas/Nutrition-and-health/Diet-and-lifestyle/Healthier-meals-Community-Chef | CSIRO
