Washington's gavel was first used during the laying of the US Capital Cornerstone in 1793. The head of the gavel is made from Cockeysville Marble, the same marble quarried from the Beaver Dam and Texas Quarries outside of Baltimore in Cockeysville, Maryland. These quarries have provided the marble for many historic structures around the United States like the US Capital Building, Baltimore's Washington Monument, DC's Washington Monument, and even Baltimore's City Hall.
