Building a highway underneath Seattle With a time-lapse camera mounted 54-feet high, you almost get a bird’s-eye view of work inside Seattle’s SR 99 tunnel. As the tunneling machine Bertha builds the tunnel, road crews are right behind – building the foundations, walls and the top deck of the double-deck highway drivers will travel on when the tunnel opens. Take a look. | WSDOT

A new 2-mile highway linking I-5 and the Port of Tacoma is coming and here’s an animation of what it will look like. Part of the SR 167 Completion Project, the highway will move freight more reliably to and from the port while taking truck traffic off local roads. Construction starts in mid-2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Once it’s done, the final project to complete the rest of the unfinished SR 167 between I-5 and Puyallup will get going. Check out the comments for a link to the

With 11 years and three construction projects in the rear-view mirror, adding much-needed capacity to the Nalley Valley Viaduct – a massive interchange connecting I-5 and SR 16 in Tacoma – is almost done. By mid-November, HOV lanes between the two highways will open, marking the end of the third and final project that rebuilt the interchange. Once open, any vehicles carrying two or more people can use the HOV lanes between SR 16 and I-5. The final piece of the Tacoma/Pierce County HOV program is

So, what exactly we were up to on I-405 this weekend? Take a look. Over the weekend, our crews completed demolition of the old 112th Ave SE bridge and installing a 200-foot-long culvert under northbound and southbound I-405. While the old bridge served us well for decades, the new bridge is longer to accommodate widening and additional lanes on I-405. The new bridge will also include direct access ramps to and from the express toll lanes, similar to the direct access ramps at Northeast 6th Stree

We had a great time being part of Construction Career Days the last week of March! More than 800 students from 30 high schools across eastern Washington participated in the two-day event hosted by Associated General Contractors, Inland Northwest Chapter. Construction Career Days is an industry-sponsored event for high school students to introduce them to the various career opportunities available in the construction industry. Students had the opportunity to try hands-on projects, operate heavy e

Last week we shared a picture on here of our contractor using liquid nitrogen to freeze the ground on our SR 520 project in Seattle. Here's a short video with a bit more information. They are using this process to control ground water during construction of a new waterline under SR 520 in the Montlake area. You can learn more about the project on our website: https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr520/montlake/home | WSDOT

Crews are making quick work demolishing a small portion of Seattle's SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct near the stadiums. Until yesterday, this section of roadway carried northbound SR 99 from the construction detour up onto the viaduct. Removing this section of the northbound ramp makes way for construction of the new intersection at South Dearborn Street, at the new tunnel's south portal. Most of the viaduct will be taken down after the opening of the new tunnel in February. Check our construction and

It’s gonna be…construction season. And May. What’s it mean? More paving. More striping. More fish passage. And a whole lot more traffic backups in order to get all that work done. We know congestion and delays aren’t in sync with your summer travel plans. We’ll do what we can to communicate our plans ahead of time, so you can know before you go. So get hype, and start planning ahead: -Bookmark our website and our real-time travel map. Download our mobile app (it’s free!) -Use different ways to g

Take a look at the quick work our contractor did last week to remove the damaged Bullfrog Overpass. Now, our bridge engineers are working to design the new westbound section. Our goal is to select a solution that allows for quick construction and we’re considering our best options. We will keep you posted. Current detours: -Eastbound I-90 to Suncadia/Roslyn – use Exit 85 to SR 903. -Westbound I-90 to south Bullfrog Road or Leisure Lane – take Exit 78, then loop back to Exit 80. -Travelers from S

This past Tuesday at noon we closed SR 21 about 15 miles south of Republic (or 45 miles north of the Columbia River) so crews could lift and move a WWII Bailey bridge to its temporary alignment. In 2017 flooding washed out the southern approach to the Sanpoil Bridge. The Bailey bridge was constructed as a temporary solution. Moving the Bailey bridge allowed crews to remove the current bridge and construct a new one in its place. The highway reopened on Thursday morning. The new bridge is expecte

We know construction delays and closures can be frustrating, but after a scary incident in Tacoma last week on a county road, we’re asking everyone to please remember that road crew workers are there to make the roads safer for everyone. According to law enforcement, an angry motorist drove through cones and struck a worker. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but our own crews tell us they’re regularly yelled at while on job sites and drivers also ignore signs asking them to slow or stop in

Tiny scenes from the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle, where the largest preservation project in Washington is well underway. Want to know what crews have been up to since we started work in mid January? Keep reading! Crews first set up the work zone and shifted traffic so we could safely get to the bridge deck. Then we completed milling - that’s when we grind off the top layer of old, worn concrete to remove damage and get down to a solid surface. Now we’re in hydro-demolition, which uses high-

Job done early ✔️ After an over-height truck damaged the Bullfrog Road overpass above westbound I-90 near Cle Elum in October, crews jumped into action and delivered big. Working under emergency authorization, WSDOT and contractor Garco Construction rebuilt the bridge using precast concrete beams to speed up construction and reduce traffic impacts. As a result, the overpass is now open weeks ahead of schedule, restoring access for the community in just 86 days. Crews will return in the spring to

Want to see what we were up to last weekend on northbound I-5 Ship Canal Bridge? Enjoy a cinematic summary of our work. What we did: - Installed 12 new drainage scuppers on NB I-5 at the Ship Canal Bridge and removed 10 old drainage structures that were no longer up to current standards. -Pulled off two overnight full closures to restripe the lanes, first to allow two through-lanes on I-5 while we were working, then to return traffic to its normal configuration before reopening. - Set the stage
