In the 1930s, the Italian government condemned the village due to fears that the cliffs would collapse. But since the 1960s, artists, bohemians and hippies began to repopulate the historical center, and today it is considered one of the hippest villages in Italy. The medieval mountain village of Calcata. The village dates back to the medieval period but one of the most interesting stories from its history comes from 1527. The story goes that after the sack of Rome in 1527, largely by German mercenaries (see my Swiss Guards post for the story), some of the mercenaries came to loot at Calcata and allegedly found the Holy Prepuce of Jesus in the Chapel here. The mercenaries were captured soon after and the one who found the holy relic hid it in his cell. It
