One way to improve outcomes for brain tumor patients: make tumors stand out from healthy tissue. A recently FDA-approved drug, used at UH for more than 10 years, is allowing surgeons to do just that. Known as 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), the drug makes brain tumor cells turn a bright pink under fluorescent light during surgery.
