Some emulators (especially online ones) don't recognise a PS2 controller as a plugged in gamepad, even with an appropriate adapter. An alternative I found works well, is to use a keyboard mapping software (JoyToKey) that allows you to use the controller as a second keyboard and play with it instead of the computer keyboard.
