January 11th 1970 - Sinn Féin Split. In December 1969, the IRA had split into the Provisionals (PIRA) & the Officials (OIRA). Those who had formed the Provisionals felt that the IRA leadership had failed to defend Nationalist areas in the six counties from Loyalist & RUC attacks, and there was also an attempt to recognise the partitionist parliaments in Stormont & Leinster House. There was a similar ideological split in Sinn Féin after a contentious Sinn Féin Ard Fheis held in the Intercontinent
