Modern corn (maize) is so heavily engineered from its wild ancestor, teosinte, that if you saw teosinte today, you probably wouldn’t even recognize it as being related to corn at all. Teosinte has just a few tiny hard kernels spaced out on a small, grass-like plant. Over thousands of years — through selective breeding and later genetic engineering — humans completely transformed it into the giant, juicy, multi-rowed ears we know today. Even crazier: about 85% of the corn grown in the U.S. today
