Teaching Sara to come towards the mounting block 🥳😍 Love all these first steps with the young ones! ⭐️ In teaching a horse to park at the mounting block I go over these steps: 1. Stepping forwards towards me 2. Coming forwards while stearing to the wall from which the hind searches one step in 3. Asking for a couple of sideways steps towards me 4. Taking these steps towards the wall 5. Stepping towards the mounting block 🥳 Full tutorial video up at www.featherlightacademy.com 🐎😍 | Feather L

Teaching Ruby how to park at the mounting block ⭐️ Can’t wait to start her under the saddle in a while 😍 In teaching horse to park themselves I follow the following steps: - Find a connection in coming forwards towards you and the whip - Find one step in with the hindleg along the wall (help the horse by stearing the head towards the wall while going forwards) - Ask a couple of steps sideways along the wall until the horse is sure to know how to step in with the hind - Walk straight up to th

Fence work, teaching them to park, teaching them to stand still while being mounted etc. It’s all the same and it all takes time and work to accomplish it in such way that the horse truly understands what you ask and is accepting of it. Most people don’t spend enough time to work on this, because we want to ride. Or they teach it as a trick. I teach it at the end of a session and let them find relaxation in the parking. This takes time, once they find the parking spot I want them to be in, I jus

The benefits of training a horse to 'Park' with Andrew McLean Training your horse to ’Park’ means that your horse to stands still, unless otherwise asked to move. It is also known in some disciplines as ‘ground tying’. Park is an excellent training tool as it produces relaxation, and is also useful for when you need to leave the horse unattended for some time (i.e, putting up jumps, getting your gear from the tackroom etc). It is how we train horses who are anxious in cross-ties, tied up to the

Park Out can be used at the end of a Behavior Chain of other moves, such as a side pass to the mounting block and then a Park Out. Playing around with the idea of 'self saddling' -> lining up and parking to be saddled. It's not an exercise that I consider as a 'have to' during colt starting, but it's definitely a fun one to play around with when building that confidence and connection throughout the sessions. Teach Your Young Horse a “Walk On” Cue When introducing Tiny to mounted riding, I focused first on teaching foundation behaviors from the ground. Mat work is a big part of that foundation. In this setup, the mats aren’t used for parking or standing still — they’re something to aim for. Mats are very visual and give Tiny a clear direction, which has a big impact on the quality of his walk. Tiny is already fluent with mats from several positions on the ground. He understands what they mean, can wo
