Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "We used a bunch of native live stakes to restore this streambank in Philadelphia. We used Salix discolor (American P* willow), Salix nigra (black willow), Cornus amomum (silky dogwood), and Cornus racemosa (gray dogwood). Live stakes are harvest from mature plants. The branches are cut, and the plant resprouts each year. All you have to do is create a hole in the ground and stick the live stake into it until you’ve buried about 2/3 of its length. The stake will send

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "We planted this Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) in a 3x3 tree pit in Philadelphia 3 years ago, and it’s growing well! The winter is the best time to prune these, so I’ve done a bit of pruning to make sure that the tree remains as a single trunk, and to clear a bit more space on the sidewalk and on the street side. It’s a good idea to prune for structure when the tree is young instead of waiting until the branches are much thicker. Pruning now will limit w

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "This large, old Northern Red Oak had a funky-looking base, so we used our resistance drill to measure the amount of strong, decay-free wood remaining around the tree. While the tree may be decaying or somewhat hollow on the inside, the tree has enough strong wood left to support itself, and is growing well. I’m glad trees like this can still be found in developed suburbia! #trees #oak #redoak #plantsofinstagram #urbanforestry #tree #arborist #nature #oaktrees #native

After cutting around the circumference of the tree a few months ago, the leaves are starting to turn brown and fall off. We’re finally seeing some results - I’ll keep you updated with more soon! 🌳 #englishivy #invasive #invasivespecies #trees #tree #sycamore #native #plantnative #garden #gardening #plants #plant #hederahelix"

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "I recently got to visit Fort Indiantown Gap, PA to see the Eastern Regal Fritillary Butterfly (Argynnis idalia ssp. idalia) - a once widespread butterfly in the east that has disappeared from over 99% of its former range. Now, it can only be found at this location, where military disturbance, prescribed fire, and a team of dedicated staff work to keep their populations stable. Besides the Regal, you can also find other uncommon Lepidoptera and plants here. There are

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Red-twig dogwood (Cornus sericea), AKA Red Osier dogwood, is just one of the many water-loving native shrubs that can be propagated using live stakes! Here’s how I do it. 🌳🌼 You can harvest thick stems from mature shrubs, cut off the top and the side branches, and stick them deep into the mud of a local streambank. Most of the time, you’ll end up with a new shrub! It can be a quick, cost-effective way to revegetate a streambank and improve conditions for wildlife.

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Leaving these planting strips as blank slates of mowed turf grass is a big missed opportunity. These strips are usually designed to be planted in - anything from small street trees, to low-growing native wildflowers, to veggie gardens, and full out mini prairies! Unfortunately, most folks don’t plant anything in them. I’ve converted most of my hellstrip into a native wildflower meadow that is constantly buzzing with bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "The Kentucky coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) is one unique tree. When they’re young, they tend not to branch out much at all, sometimes leading to a 4-5 year-old, 12’ tall sapling with no branches. They look a bit silly in the winter time after they’ve lost all their leaves, but their oversized leaves make up for their lack of fine branches during the growing season. They are great park and street trees - typically very tolerant of heat, drought, and compaction once

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "One of the worst #invasive #plants in the #Philadelphia area is Japanese Honeysuckle. It’s a climbing, vigorous #vine that is capable of strangling and shading out #native plants and trees, frequently preventing natural #forest regeneration. In this case, many vines were climbing up a Colorado Blue #Spruce and shading it out. Here’s how I took care of it before it got worse! I would recommend removing this plant from your property, especially if it’s climbing on nati

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "In my township, this woodland is the only place left on public (and probably private) land where some native spring ephemeral wildflowers bloom. These are not rare wildflowers in intact ecosystems, but natural areas of high quality are unfortunately not common in my area. We’ve (@colonialcanopytrees) been working to remove the aggressive invasives that are threatening these valuable native plants. This small woodland remnant was not cleared for farming in the 19th ce

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Here’s a quick summary of how I grew some gorgeous native wildflowers from a wild population in my area! These Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) are a great native wildflower for much of the mid-Atlantic and Central US as well as eastern Canada. It is incredibly fulfilling to collect, germinate, plant, and nurture a native wildflower to maturity and to watch it support native insects and pollinators. I’ve done it a few times with a few different plants, but

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "The Dwarf Chinkapin Oak (Quercus prinoides) is a small, shrubby oak native to barren, dry, sandy sites throughout parts of the eastern and central US. In my home state of Pennsylvania, it is mostly limited to serpentine barrens, fire-prone sites, and otherwise harsh areas where large trees cannot usually grow. Within the past few years, especially because of the work / research of Dr. Doug Tallamy (@homegrownnationalpark), demand for this small oak species has increa
