The critically endangered dusky gopher frog population has grown by 622! Produced using in-vitro fertilization, the froglets were released earlier this month into restored habitat in Mississippi with the help of the Memphis Zoo, Detroit Zoo, Dallas Zoo and Como Park Zoo & Conservatory. This is the fourth and most successful release for the species to date, which is part of a large-scale effort to establish a new self-sustaining population of dusky gopher frogs. Within the heart of Ward Bayou in south Mississippi, there are two shallow ponds where one of the rarest frogs in the United States can be found- the dusky gopher frog. The Memphis Zoo has spearheaded the repopulation of this critically endangered frog and since 2017 the zoo, along with its partners in research, have release around 4,000 tadpoles and 4,000 frogs into the area!
