Anomalocaris

Anomalocaris was a large Cambrian radiodont predator, commonly estimated at a few tens of centimeters long, making it one of the earliest known apex predators in marine ecosystems.  It had spiny grasping appendages and a ring shaped mouth with hard plates. The long-standing idea that it crushed trilobites has been challenged, and recent studies suggest it likely preferred softer prey, with its mouthparts not well suited to routinely breaking heavily mineralized shells.
