The Matilda II, with its thick frontal armour and powerful high-velocity gun, terrified the Germans at the Battle of Arras in 1940, exploiting their tactical shortcomings and causing Hitler to become heavily involved in the tank-design process, demanding increasingly heavily armoured and better-gunned tanks.
